sass of style

For the bold and expressive girl.

I have had some amazing experiences in New York City so far and although I think I’m fitting in, I’m still my awkward self. Now being awkward is great, but I’d say New York gives you a million more chances to embarrass yourself with so many people around. Here are a few of my proud moments.

  1. Try to map out Manhattan on my hand

Now this may sound all too familiar to anyone from Michigan, but really this is an impossible task. You can’t help, but look stupid. Majority of the streets are numbered in New York so you can figure out a location 90% of the time by knowing your crossroads. It is also very impossible to configure the shape of Brooklyn with your hands and you end up making a bear paw type shape.

  1. Yell, “Hey I’m from Michigan too!”

The other week I got so excited when I saw a group of people all wearing Michigan shirts. I immediately felt like I needed to say something. Now these were University of Michigan shirts, in New York a lot of kids go to U of M for college so it doesn’t necessarily mean they are from Michigan. I awkwardly yelled, “Hey I’m from Michigan!” This is where they automatically yelled, “Go blue!” This was probably the most awkward thing I could’ve said (lol). I went to Michigan State University for graduate school and had no idea what to say. This was then followed by my immediate regret of saying anything .

  1. Talking to yourself

Being in New York, you use public transit and walk around a lot. This has really minimized my alone time in the car where I think of things I said that day, or repeat things I thought were funny. This means I am now walking down the street murmuring funny things I heard or reiterating interactions that went horribly that day. So my lack of reflective car rides have turned me into looking like a crazy.

4.Trying to avoid running into people

The number one thing to remember is that people will get out of your way if you’re moving fast enough. If you pause and do the back and forth you-go ahead type of situation, you’re just going to run into each other. It’s inevitable. It also is just annoying as hell too.

5. Gone through spinning doors the wrong way

I don’t know if I just haven’t used a spinning door in a long time or not, but for the first time in my life I went through a spinning door the wrong way, twice in 2 weeks. Both times it was a swanky bar and the doormen would just laugh at me (lol). It was so brutal, both times I looked at the doorman and was like, ” I just did that the wrong way didn’t I?”

  1. Realizing you’ve been shit on two weeks later

So one day at work I looked at my computer chair and noticed there was a large chunk of dirt on it. I freaked out a little and showed my co-workers. I was grossed out cleaned it up and moved on. A week later I look inside my hood of my winter jacket to find the same stain. I  had been walking around with this disgusting stain in my hood. How do you get a stain your hood? Well surely something has to be above you for that. So yes, check your outerwear frequently for disgusting or awkward stains because you may not see it, but everyone in the subway station can.

Hope you liked my embarrassing moments, but of course here are the outfit deets!

  1. I live in New York and I can relate to this! I talk to myself and I feel like I am constantly on the verge of walking right into someone. And after four years of living in New York, I still get excited when I meet someone from the same place I am from originally (the San Francisco Bay Area!). What’s funny is that I think I started talking to myself because I was in New York. Even though there are always so many people around, I still feel anonymous, like no one will hear me and no one will care. It’s liberating compared to a small town, where if you make a fool of yourself in front of someone you might actually encounter that person again. And great outfit btw! The heart purse is the cutest thing.
