sass of style

For the bold and expressive girl.

I have come to terms with my extremely pale skin. Although I am Italian, I must be from the northern area because I become very ghost like in the winter. There are a few things that people with pale skin have to be aware of relating to sun exposure. First of all use the highest SPF you can find, I promise you, you will still get tan! This will help avoid skin damage. Second of all, always wear a hat, especially if you refuse to put sun tan lotion in your hair like me. I have found an age spot already like I mentioned in one of my previous posts and it is not something I would call a beauty mark. Thirdly,  cover ups are friend not foe.

Cover ups do not have to be that white towel material in some ugly robe form. They can be light and breezy, with an intricate design. They are a definite style staple at the beach. They are essential especially when you have to go to a restaurant or a store after a long day in the sand. No one really wants to see you in your booty shorts and bathing suit top, when they are more concerned with how well they are going to be tipped. That being said, below I have selected a few cover ups that are perfect for your future summer escapades. And to all my pale friends out there, please consider it!

Black and white horizontal stripes have been receiving a lot of attention lately. Whether it be on T-shirts, blouses, dresses or skirts, black and white stripes have been popping up everywhere on the chicest of the chic. There is something almost European or more specifically French about the simple, but fashionable design. Black and white stripes should definitely be a basic in every girls closet because the design is easy to mix and match with anything, even other loud and bold printed pieces of merchandise. Below I featured some of my favorite black and white horizontal striped pieces for the summer.

Fashion Technology is inevitable. As our technology evolves in the world so does the technology of every industry including fashion. Not only is the technology evolving but it is inspiring the clothes. Pictured above is an Emilio Pucci Dress that features a tourist holding a selfie stick. Pucci usually is known for its scenic prints, but it has truly captured the technology of our era in high fashion. This piece will seem outdated fast, but it will definitely have its vintage comeback in the future as well.

Most recently, the virtual dressing room has arrived. This mirror created by Samsung allows you to try on the clothes without even putting them on. The mirror was recently shown at a shopping showcase in Hong Kong. Consumers in attendance experienced an image of themselves in a necklace by Chow Sang Sang Jewelry. Samsung believes these mirrors will not only replace mirrors in retail stores but at home. This is such an amazing tool that I would love to use. Half the reason I enjoy online shopping more than going to the mall is the hassle of having to try everything on. Trying on clothes is extremely important, but it leaves me stressed out and unwilling to spend the time trying on a bigger or smaller size. Dressing rooms can be chaotic and have horrible light, where this mirror gives you a simplistic and quick experience. Hopefully these transparent mirrors make their way to stores in a timely fashion.

Virtual reality fashion shows have also become a popular trend for brands to experiment with lately. Most recently Dior has created a 3D backstage view of their fashion show that displays models putting on makeup, photographers and even shows the head designer Raf Simons working backstage. Viewers get to see a 360 degree view of  the backstage area. Dior has been the most recent brand to also take on these virtual headsets, which are available only in select stores though.  This chic video shows the making of the headsets.

Many brands have been utilizing this new virtual headset tool to show their actual fashion shows in stores. Topshop used the headsets for fashion week in 2014 for a live experience. The virtual show allowed consumers to be front row, backstage, on stage or above the stage. This also included being up close and personal with celebrities taking selfies. Here is Topshops promotional video from last year.

Hope you enjoyed this weeks Fashion Tech news.

I am obsessed with this jumpsuit that I found at Nordstrom. It was a hidden treasure on the sale rack. It was originally $52.00, but it was on sale for $31.20. It was the very last item of its kind in a large size. Most people may look past this item because of its size, but I knew better. Just like rompers, jumpsuits are a travesty for a girl with a long torso. I slipped into the dressing room and put it on. At first it made me feel a little more hip-y than usual, but then I looked at the back of it in the mirror. I don’t know if it was the 100% rayon fabric or what, but it definitely accentuated my derriere.  For some people this might make them shy away from the item, but I like embracing what I believe to be my best assets.

When I finally got to wear this beautiful piece of merchandise, I felt a surge of confidence. The tribal print with my vintage Bill Blass jacket had me feeling like a million bucks. This casual outfit was perfect for being in downtown Detroit at Great Lakes Coffee Detroit for a surprise day trip. My boyfriend and I tried their 50/50 draft beer which was half imperial stout and half cold brewed coffee as well as their meat and cheese plate. It was a delicious surprise and a well dressed occasion.

I do suggest trying on jumpsuits before you buy them. They are definitely a trending item, but they can go horribly wrong. You need to pay attention to the length of the pant, if the straps or sleeves restrict you at all and of course the unwanted camel toe must be watched out for. If you are sold on team jumpsuit there are some items below I suggest.

Michael Kors has become the new Coach. Coach sadly had a vast fall in sales, blatantly because of the lack of status and quality that was being produced. Coach became owned by almost every individual and therefore lost its lack of appeal to consumers. Michael Kors has been experiencing the same downfall in the past six moths. The bags have become a universally owned product and consumers are not smitten over the brand.

FT Michael Kors Same Store Sales Forecast 2016 5-27-15

                 (ft.com)

Recently Michael Kors has experienced a $4.9 million dollar lawsuit. Consumers have been complaining about the quality of merchandise in the Michael Kors outlet stores says the fashionista.com article. The tags on the products will state the retail price of an item at $120 and the actual price will be $79.99. Now this would be completely fine if the products in the outlet were of the same quality as the actual store product sold at $120. Michael Kors has been making replica products with cheaper quality materials so that they can market the product as marked down from its original price, but it was actually produced at a lower cost to begin with.

Outlet stores in general can be deceiving to consumers. It is best to shop the sale racks at the actual luxury brand stores than at an outlet store. There is talk about changing the tags, showing the “retail price” as the “value” instead says the Pop Fashion Podcast. This will give consumers a better idea of the actual quality they are receiving.

It is sad to see Michael Kors lose their lack of allure and sense of luxury. First it was the downfall of Coach and now MK. If I were to make a prediction I would say that MARC by Marc Jacobs would be the next popular luxury handbag for consumers. If you would like to jump on the bandwagon early, and if you believe my prediction makes sense, here are a few bags that I am lusting over. Of course maybe you already own one as well.

If you have been in the metro Detroit area in the past week, you know it has been extremely humid and rainy. This not only doubles the size of your hair, but also makes you just want to hide indoors for all of eternity. As I ventured outside for my night off work I couldn’t decide if it was going to down pour or not. Right after these photos were taken, I was definitely happy for my decision of such a fabulous vintage Burberry rain coat.

As my boyfriend and I made our way downtown and I was enjoying swaying my jacket as I walked, I realized something. “Oh my god!” I said smiling to myself. He said, “What?” I just started giggling to myself more. “Have you ever seen Pretty Woman?” He stared at me and just started laughing. The red trench coat, the blue bottoms, the white top, the huge hair, and the mid heel boots had me looking like Julia Roberts. So even though I realized I had a modest hooker rendition on, I was still in love with my rain day style. Check out some similar rain coats below to get the look.

lilly-pulitzer-fat-shaming

The fashion industry revolves around extraordinarily tall and unseeingly thin women. The thin body type in itself is a style that the population has adapted to, but with every era there is a new trend. The population has just begun to see the allurement of having a large derriere. This is something that is a positive step in a healthy direction for girls.

In this week’s fashion news there were four stories about shaming people into being skinny. The first was a behind the scenes look at the Pennsylvania headquarters of Lilly Pulitzer. The Cut shared a photo gallery of their offices and some vibrant mood boards. In one of the workers cubicles that was featured showed several cartoon drawings of fat shaming. The images read, “Just another day of…fat, white, and hideous…You should probably just kill yourself.” Another image said, “Put it down, carb face.” These images were in an employees individual cubicle, but it reflects extremely poorly on the brand. The brand caters up to size 14 in stores as well as plus size online and many displeased fans took to Twitter. This is definitely something that the company should have monitored or at least inspected before a behind the scenes photo opportunity came into the office. Lilly Pulitzer basically came out with a statement saying that it was the thoughts of one employee and does not reflect on how Lilly Pulitzer views body image. That person in my opinion should be on suspension or fired. Not because of the action alone necessarily, but because of all the repercussions it caused.

The newest skinny testing craze is called the Bellybutton Test. In this test you wrap your right arm behind your back and try to grab for your belly button. If you can not reach your belly button you need to lose weight. This so called test originated in a random study and went viral in Asia and is now all over Instagram. This test is completely ridiculous because there are so many factors in this test like how long your arms are, how flexible you are and the plain fact that this test was made up. I took it upon myself to try out this test. I am very flexible naturally especially since I have double jointed elbows and shoulders. I figured this would work to my favor extremely, but it did not. It took a lot of effort and I also wasn’t sure if I was trying too hard. Should I be relaxed? Or reaching for my life type of thing? Either way this test is pointless, but it may be the thing backing up your Instagram feed soon.

This week Lauren Conrad’s lifestyle blog has gained a few new rules. The blog will no longer include the words “skinny”, “thin”, or “slim”. Instead the blog will be using words like “fit”, “toned”, and “healthy. This is part of their June Shape Up theme for the blog. These rules have definitely gained some attention for LaurenConrad.com and are a positive step in the right direction for body image concerned young adults.

saint_laurent_banned_ad

In the U.K., the advertising standards authority has taken a stance against the new Yves Saint Laurent ad. They have banned the ad from being shown within the U.K. The image displays a woman whose arms are nearly the same size as her very thin arms. You can also see her rib cage in the low cut of the shirt. The ASA in the U.K. claimed this ad to be irresponsible. I say good for them this isn’t a healthy look for anyone. As Lauren Conrad has proclaimed we should be more focused on being fit, healthy and toned.

Denim skirts took a turn for the worst in after the early 2000’s, but this updated A-line denim skirt is the perfect modern touch for your wardrobe. Not to mention how the denim on denim trend is here to stay for a bit. The skirt is perfect to accentuate your waist and hide a wider hip. The graphic sneakers give the look an added chic factor as well as the complimenting necklace. Check out some more pics below of my Denim Daze Day, and where you can get the look.

Rompers and I have a love hate relationship. The first romper I ever bought for my 20th birthday was a mess. Cheeks out, camel toe, you get the picture. My body type has a significantly smaller waist compared to my hips because of my long torso. So when I bought my first romper lets just say the sizing did not work like your average dress would. I now buy larges in rompers so that my cheeks do not fall out or serious camel toe is not an issue. Long torsos make rompers a struggle, but I have found a middle ground with them.

More recently, I was out with my sister and her husband and he had no idea what it meant that I was wearing a romper. I was baffled. His friend who later arrived had no idea either. I tried to explain to them that they were out of the loop. “How can you not know what a romper is?” I exclaimed. So I called over one of the waitresses at the pub and I asked, ” You know what a romper is, right?” She said, “a what?” A what? A what! She had no idea. I felt as though I was in a different universe. I said, ” Wait you really don’t know what a romper is?” That was a definite sass of style moment for me. Clearly quite a few people were taught a thing or two about fashion that day. We even made a joke about it and the guys were screaming “Romper!” every time we encountered one.

Specifically, this featured romper is one of my favorites. I love the earthy tones and geometric shapes. I love the waist cinching band in the middle for a girl with a small waist and wide hips like me as well. Just accessorize with some layered jewelry and gold accent sandals and Voila, a perfect outfit to romp around town in.

Below are some similar rompers to try out from Zara, ASOS, and H & M.

Monday night was the Council of Fashion Designer of America Awards, where the fashions most loved strutted their stuff on the red carpet. Scroll through the slideshow and decide whether you think the outfit is chic, confusing, or a catastrophe. My opinions are listed below, but I’d love to hear your opinion in the comment box!

Chic:

Gigi Hadid– I love this gold Michael Kors jumpsuit. A definite win for Gigi.

Natasha Poly-The neckline and the cape like back of this dress is a standout!

Katharine McPhee– This mix of pieces and accessories make me so jealous, such a great combination!

Jenna Lyons– I absolutely adore this chic look such a modern fashion forward ensemble.

Confused:

Vanessa Hudgens– Vanessa is traditionally known for her free spirited boho style. I love her look, but I am confused why she is going for a Kate Middleton aura. Although the brand is a unique choice, so I give her definite credit for that.

Janelle Monae– Don’t get me wrong this look is very bad @$$, but it is borderline costume-like for me. Does anyone else see a Matador?

Kim Kardashian– I love the dress, but the fur on the shoulders is something I would definitely live without. She looks like a gladiator of some sort to me with the accentuated shoulders.

Catastrophe:

Diane Kruger-Three Words. Queen of Hearts.

Amanda Seyfried– I sadly have to report that I dislike this dress. I love the designers of Rodarte, but the colors and the sequins just are too much for my liking.

Julianna Margulies– I guess she really wanted to show off that she was in for the new granny panty trend, but really maybe this outfit would have appealed to me more if it was in a bright color.
